Order images within a gallery

When adding images to a gallery there appears to be no way to control the order in which they are shown within the gallery. Just as we can order sub-articles under an article, we should be able to decide on the order in which images are shown within a gallery.

At present images appear to be ordered either by the sequence in which they are added to the site or alphabetically by title. Neither method is really satisfactory since an image might belong to more than one gallery and we might wish to order it differently in different galleries. A weight property for the image within each gallery, like an article weight would be one way to address this, but even better might be the nicer UI alternative of letting images be dragged and dropped into the required order inside each gallery.

A use I have for this feature is to be able to have a "summary" gallery of an illustrated story. The individual images also sit above articles that I can order but at the end I want to show them all in one place in the same order within a gallery. At the same time, I would like to have other more "world building" galleries where I'd like to pull together some of same but ordered by (for example) location.

The Team's Response

This suggestion did not reach the required support to be considered.   Clarification:

This was declined on the basis that a single image can exist in multiple galleries so implementing a weighting system will mean that the weight of an image will remain the same regardless of which gallery is in.

if this was to reach in the future the threshold of 300 people as well it will be considered to be implemented as a slightly wonky weighting system.   Keep in mind that as it is, images are ordered alphanumerically. So there are ways to order them as it is.
