What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

First off, I love the new Chronos update, but I think it would be really helpful if we could "overlay" map images on top of each other for zooming in. You can kind of do this right now in Chronicles having multiple maps, but I would like to be able to zoom in to an area on my map and add a more detailed version of that area as an image that appears once I've zoomed in. Like you know on Google Earth you can zoom into an area, and at first it's super blurry, but after a second it loads a more clear/detailed picture of the area you zoomed into.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Right now, we are limited to having one map that you zoom into, and once you zoom in too far the image is just blurry and you can't zoom in anymore. With this feature, you'd be able to add an image to a selected area, so that once you zoom in on a map the clearer image loads or something.   I have a lot of maps of different planets, and it would be so nice to access clear views of small rivers and cities just by zooming in after adding image overlays at certain zoom percentages.

The Team's Response

Sadly not possible - I know what your minds-eye sees but I know also what this means programmatically and it is the equivalent of "zoom deeper and make it clearer" in police dramas

This is a great feature to show continents and their countries on a map.

I have no idea how possible this idea really is, but it would be amazing.

I use high-res maps to get around the problem with zooming in, and it has a noticeable impact on load times - plus the default zoom means the map opens already tightly zoomed in on the centre. This design would have an impact on system resources & require a lot more call-backs to the code, but would make for a superb interactive feature, especially if it could be combined with Chronicles.

This would be very nice for those of us with very detailed maps; I've used a program called MapTiler to generate nested images for a zoomable map system.

Brilliant idea. The question is, how much would that slow down the loading of separate images. If you add plenty of markers, it's already loading very slowly.
