Sylène's Duty

Cold.
Cold with a strange metallic taste.

So that was what death felt like thought Sylène. Not like she wasn't aware of what death looked like but for the first time she experienced it firsthand. She closed her eye and exhaled slowly. "I am sorry G, this is the only way" she said softly.
"I know" answered the slow and composed voice "and I understand. See you on the other side Sy". The calm resolve in G voice was chilling her to the bone. Her old friend as been with her from the day she learns to fly to the moment she grabbed the ejection handle. She looked at the black box in her arm. Holding the crypto-safe on her belly to protect it from the raging inferno of atmospheric re-entry she thought about what she has sacrificed to protect it against them. "They won't find your body there and your trajectory is nominal". As usual, G had read her mind without even looking at her. That's when she sees it.
A small light then a small perturbation in space-time preceded the ship arriving. Hog'Naer'Gur. The Star killer, herald of the end of time. They were here.
Finally.
She felt the air thicken around her shoulder and streams of plasma started appearing on the corner of her visor. "It's time," said G "you gonna lose radio signal soon". "I KNOW!" she yelled back "I know... It's just... I love you G" "Mutual sentiment Sy and you know it. but I need you to say it" answered G "I know" she replied and after a long pause, she added "do it, auth code:4.6.7.2.3.1.5." "Aye Captain!" said the voice of G, with a slightly emotional she never heard before. "I advised you close your visor, for safety reasons" the voice added. "G, I gonna die in 2 minutes 41 seconds and a few if you computations are correct. and they are, they always are..." she laughed back pausing when it occurred to her they were arguing about her own death. "Goodbye Captain" she heard faintly. Then she sees it: a small blue point exploding in a blinding flash of light. The light was so strong that neither her automated visor nor her own lids were a match for it. In a blinding white light, she saw the shadow of Hog'Naer'Gur split and break in pieces before fading away in a sea of white. She felt a tear roll on her face and crash on her visor. Guðr was no more. Her friend was no more.
"GROUND IMPACT IN 10. 9. 8. 7. 6. 5." announced sharply her armor alarm.

"See, you were right again G. " she said closing her eyes.
