Glendale is destroyed by explosions of the Glendale Nuclear Power Plant and the subsequent eruption of the Mt. Dorcha dormant volcano (Vesuvius style)
Bandoni Industries was harvesting energy from nightmare demons they captured from opening an inter-dimensional portal between the Earth realm and Erebus, the land of nightmares.
A month prior to the explosion Griselda took control of Jenelle’s body in an attempt to discover the source of the monsters who had plagued Glendale over the past year.
Jenelle and Rick had determined the monsters came from the Glendale Nuclear Power Plant, but were hesitant to take action due to the overwhelming amount of security within and outside of the plant.
Griselda, not wanting an opportunity pass by, Griselda convinces Jenelle to allow her to take over Jenelle’s body.
At the power plant Griselda finds monsters in tanks with hoses draining their essence. Some tanks are huge and hold dragons, cyclops, ogres, and giants. At the core of the reactor, she finds a room of children who are all in medically induced comas. Looking at their charts, Griselda notices that the charts simply list the children’s fears. All the monsters listed on the charts match the monsters being harvested. Griselda surmises that the children are being used to create the monsters.
When she tries to wake the children, Griselda realizes she can’t. So to save any future children from being abused in this way, Griselda decides to blow up the reactor with the children and monsters trapped inside.
*Unbeknownst to the reader and Jenelle, Griselda finds a tank where a young girl lies in suspended animation. The girl looks like a young Jenelle, leading Griselda to question if Jenelle may in reality be one of the monsters created by the Bandoni Industries .*
The explosion from the reactor sets off a burst of energy into the earth, with caused the dormant volcano to which it is attached to erupt.
The explosions are sudden and the chain reactions of explosions, fires, gas, ash, andpyroclastic surges catches the townspeople by surprise, especially given it happens at night.
Those who do escape make their way to Varennes a neighbouring town. The Countess, Lady Jeanette Forbin allows the refugees to stay in her home.
Jenelle decides to leave Avalon after her parents are killed. Rick asks her to stay and even says that if she waits, he will tie up lose ends and go with her.
Jenelle doesn’t want Rick to know the truth behind her decision to leave Glendale. She feels guilt as it was her decision to allow Griselda to take over her body. Not knowing Griselda's reasoning, Jenelle believes that Griselda motives were purely evil. She now believes that she has to do anything within her power to prevent Griselda from ever gaining power over her ever again.
Griselda declines Rick's offer to travel with her. She makes up the excuse that she needs to grieve and find a new sense of purpose on her own.
