"Respect is earned not given."

Well, yes and no.

Respect must be earned but not always on an individual basis.

Let's take your mother for example: while you might say she never "earned" your respect, the act of carrying you, then putting her life on the line to bring you into this world was her earning it.

There is the boss/employee, or even supervisor and co worker relationship. You might not think they've earned your respect personally, but the position they've earned in the company commands your respect.

Treating people with respect even if they have not earned it on a personal level is the measure of a great Adult. And by doing so, you'll end up earning the respect of those around you.
