More then 10,000 volunteer for military experiments for a new weapon. 300 survive. Their minds and all of who they are are transfered into combat robots.
These 300 could fend off attacks on whole worlds. It would take them 1,000 years, but the 300 would defeat the Skoll, and free Furse Space.
This mind swap ability was lost during the war. Others have tried to recreate the tech but no person’s mind has be able to last more then 5 years before it destroys itself.

First A.I. Wars in Furse Space. The Skoll have started to become seen as less of a threat on some worlds who grow fearful of the A.I. which saved them.
Ai Wars. In the midst of the Techno-Mage civil war, AI revolt in Furse Space. Known as the 300, former humans incorporated into Bot bodies during the Thousand Year Darkness, see themselves as slaves. By the end of the war, Bots are granted certain freedoms, but the 300 withdraw from Furse Space. Legends and myths form about them. Said to forge an AI empire outside the Settled Worlds. Other claim they search for the First A.I while others that they fight a hidden evil and clear worlds of threats before humanns arrive.
Peace is made, and many of the 300 leave Furse Space. Self aware A.I. gain rights throughout Furse Space.
