Chapter Twenty-Five

“So, since they’re called bonny lilies, I imagine they’ll be in the ‘Bonny Territory’.”  Poole says, putting air quotes as he says the last two words as the group travels, and Trouse makes a noncommittal grunt.

“Still thinking about that potion?” Gole asks, drawing Seehea’s attention,

“What potion?” He asks suspiciously, and Gole glares at him,

“Trouse had a dream about a potion,” she says, her voice dangerously even. Trouse purses his lips,

“I wonder what color it would change my hair to. You said it changes hair color,” he says, not paying any attention to the bickering of Seehea and Gole.

“Hey, are you even listening? I’m trying to tell you where we’re going. You’ve been spaced out all morning!” Poole exclaims as he taps Gole on the back with his lance, and Gole snarls at him,

“Don’t think I won’t claw you.”

“I don’t doubt that, but you’re walking the wrong direction. We need to go northeast, not southeast.” Poole says wearily, and Gole abruptly changes directions.

“Maybe I don’t want to go to ‘Bonny Territory’. Your horse follows me, not the other way around,” Gole sniffs, attempting to salvage her dignity, and Poole grimaces,

“Whatever, Gole. Just walk.”

“What is a bonny, anyways?” Trouse asks as he checks for the third time in thirty minutes if his potion is still in his pocket. Poole’s eyes brighten,

“Bonnies are related to the alterna but are more advanced- “Poole stops to cast Gole a meaningful look before continuing.

“They are imaginary creatures that were invented by human storytellers to entertain their children long ago and are very joyous in every story. They are said to always travel by rank, with the highest in the front and the lowest in the back. They are very indirect, never saying what they need to, but speaking vaguely. Or they’ll let another creature inform others of what they want to say. They’re supposed to be more acclimated to survival than alterna-“ Again, Poole pauses to glance at Gole again, and she bares her teeth at him.

“-but they do look like the alterna. They are much smarter than cats, and only children believe in their existence. They are obviously legends based off of the alterna, only made better than alterna,” Poole finishes. Trouse tilts his head to the side,

“Why do they have their own territory if they’re only imaginary?” he inquires, and Poole smiles slightly,

“Some parents tell their children that bonnies actually live there. It’s nothing but swamps where no one wants to live, so no one goes there. That only adds to the legend.”
