Al'tarch's Arcane Index (Stirring)

Wondrous Item

Rare Wizard and Artificer Requires Attunement

Arcane Intelligence. This item holds within it an arcane intelligence in the form of a sliver of its creator's consciousness. Represented as a tall, lean, amethyst drachenaki wearing robes of purple, silver, and dark grey, the intelligence presents itself standing imperiously with its hands clasped behind its back.   If the intelligence is forced to make a roll, treat its Strength, Dexterity as 0 and its Constitution as 14. If its "mental" faculties are challenged, it has an Intelligence score of 21, Wisdom score of 12, and Charisma of 8.   While it can query most stored information of its own accord with no roll, if tasked to its Extrapolate action, it has the following skill scores: Arcana: +9
History: +9
Medicine: +5
Religion: +9   The crystal itself has been made exceptionally resilient by various wards, and has a Damage Threshold of 15 and a hit point total of 15 + (2 x the attuned creature's caster level). It has the following reactions to damage types:   Immunity
Necrotic
Poison
Psychic   Resistance
Force
Piercing
Slashing   Vulnerability
Bludgeoning   The Index, if broken or damaged, can be fully repaired with the Mending cantrip. If destroyed and then mended, the intelligence loses two points in all its mental attributes and becomes increasingly difficult to work with. If its Charisma score is reduced to 0, the intelligence becomes hostile to any users who interact with it, dealing 1d12 psychic damage to them per turn, refusing to answer any further queries. Close inspection indicates that the Index has likely been repaired in this fashion once before.   If an attuned user is not a wizard or artificer, they only benefit from the Index's reserves of stored knowledge and may query it as usual, but do not benefit from any additional known spells or access to magic.   The Mind-Space. An attuned user may take a ritual action to enter their consciousness into a shadowy pocket dimension. The material realm fades away and becomes a translucent after-image of itself. The user can still vaguely sense the outside world and pain, scent, and sound. Other creatures within 20ft. of the user in the mundane world appear as ghosts, but are audible to the user. The user, in the mind-space, is drawn onto a calm, tiny island in the middle of the ocean. It is the same time of day on the island as the user's current timezone. At night, the island is comfortably lit by the stars and cosmos overhead. Other creatures cannot perceive the mind-space, nor its resident intelligence.   While an entranced user may hear sound emanating from nearby, they have disadvantage on all Perception checks. A user may move around in the mind-space without moving in the mundane world, and may speak to the residing intelligence without speaking aloud. Questions or commands posed by creatures outside the mind-space do not effect the intelligence.   Spellbook Properties. The Index's design makes it an effective spellbook and arcane focus. While attuned to the Index, the user knows the Eldritch Blast cantrip, which manifests as a blast of bright violet energy. Furthermore, the Index comes pre-filled with a vast array of mundane, topical knowledge, and may boost a character's understanding of a given topic. An attuned creature knows the Guidance cantrip. Additionally, once per day, an attuned user may touch a creature to imbue it with the benefits of the Borrowed Knowledge spell. If the caster is able to cast 2nd level spells from the Wizard or Artificer list, they may continue to cast Borrowed Knowledge from their own reserve of spell points or slots. Intelligence is the spellcasting modifier for all three spells, and the Index must be wielded when casting any of the spells provided by it.   Spells may be recorded into the Index using the standard wizard rules. The cost is an equivalent amount of sundust used to imbue the Index's arcane intelligence with the knowledge.   The Index contains the following spells:   1st Level
Mage Armor
Magic Missile
Floating Disk   2nd Level
Kinetic Jaunt
Locate Object
Vortex Warp   3rd Level
Blink
Sending   4th Level
Control Water   A great many additional spells are evident at most levels, but seem to be damaged beyond recognition when queried. The above retrievable spells seem to have been "reinforced" in their arcane transcription and thus survived fragmentation. Presumably these are some of the previous owner's signature spells.   Scan Object. The Index serves as a suitable material component for the Identify spell. If an attuned creature knows the Identify spell, they may use it while in physical contact to a text to absorb the text into the Mind-Space. The intelligence absorbs the knowledge, and a ghostly copy of the text is added to the mind-space's library. The attuned creature does not automatically gain knowledge of the text themselves unless they bother to read the text in the real world or in the Mind-Space. When using Identify in this manner, it can only be cast as a ritual.   Unique Actions. As an interactive reference device, the Index has a number of unique actions it can perform. These are as follows:   Query. You pose a question to the arcane intelligence, who endeavors to bring up stored information on the subject for the user to review.
Extrapolate. Typically performed after a query, you command the intelligence to interpret available data. It makes a roll using its skills, and attempts to summarize information to the user.

Description

This rich purple crystal was, presumably, extracted from the living body of the mage Al'tarch. It has been imbued with an arcane intelligence representative of his own form; a tall, lean amethyst drachenaki wearing robes of purple, silver, and dark grey.

Indexes are rare, and only created by the most erudite mages. They are universally capable of storing vast amounts of written information, indexes are magical tools able to provide summary answers, reference points, and citations to questions posed to them.
