Magioclastia

History

Magioclastia is the name given to the magiotrophic bacteria that was discovered in the s around the year 312. It had developed there, feeding off the latent magical energy of the region. All magical practitioners that spent time in the caves found they had a slightly reduced magical potency. This was found to be due to bacteria that fed on their magical energy. The rate of consumption, however, wasn’t ever enough to seriously hinder them or their use of magic.

Cultivation and Uses

Once the full extent of the bacteria was discovered, they made all efforts to learn to cultivate it away from the caves. Arcane researchers were very excited by the idea of having an unobtrusive way to clean magical energy from a place or object. This ability would be vital to them for continued and deeper thaumaturgical experimentation.   The natural growth rate was aided by arcane means so that it could be used as a way to fix magical experiments gone wrong, magical energy leaks affecting the outside world, etc. It is also the only cure known for the Spirit Sapped condition.   However, the primary use for the bacteria is for cleaning arcane tools after use. They are submerged in a liquid with a small amount of magical potential in it and then once removed run through a flame which has been found to destroy the magioclastia, which is very susceptible to fire.   As time has gone on researchers have managed to create different “breeds” of magioclastia that each have a different type of magic they prefer to feed on. This has allowed more nuanced removal of magical energy and gone on to create a whole new area of magical study. Micromagia, the study and application of microscopic magical tools. Magic users have dedicated their lives to this study just with the goal of adding one new subspecies to the records.

Accidents

This hasn’t been without mistakes. A whole sub-basement level of the is currently deemed off-limits and has been sealed off after a created species learned to eat through arcane forged metal. Thankfully, it had lost the ability to eat anything but infused metal and has since been contained within magically reinforced stone.
