The Plume

Geography

A blanket of ashy gray sits over the sky. Thick and opaque, it blocks out the sun leaving but a red dot that traces above the world. From the plume comes black rain and the regular Ashfalls. Despite these destructive measures, it never lessens in its dominion over the sky, for it is perpetually fed by the steady toxic breath of the mountains of fire. The loss of light through the clouds makes plant growth rather difficult. It is a fate suffered by all who live in the dark world below.

Fauna & Flora

Unbeknownst to the people in the world below, the Plume is home to millions of tiny organisms that feed on the clouds like a bed of nutrients. Like krill in the sea, these creatures too are but food for larger beasts. Massive, air filled meat-ships are the whales of this smoky ocean. Much like whales beneath the waves, they too sweep across swaths of the sky eating and growing for much of their lives.

Verdant Skies

Every few seasons when the temperatures are just right, the sky turns awash with green. What follows is widely considered one of the most beautiful sights to be seen by human eyes. When the Plume has reached peak verdant saturation, there must be fall. But in place of ashen rain, spores fall upon the land and coat the barren ashscape into a lush green. Only then are the dreams of child and adult alike, lit once more. Hopes rekindles, for if beauty like this still exists out there, perhaps the world isn't truly dead. The Sporefalls are watched from the safety of shelter as for many, they can be harmful to respiration. The few that have walked into the storm of green (with proper masks of course) return changed. One doesn't simply witness hope incarnate in such high concentration and remain bitter. It is truly a display of nature's power in a world that would burn without it. It is a final fight from one who was thought to be exhausted. In a single word, it is hope.

History

Generations have lived and died beneath the Plume though there are tales that have been past down from a time before. They reminisce of a blue sky and clouds of white that once crowned a livelier world, one before the Ashfall. Such stories are told to wide-eyed children who fantasize about seeing such sights in the world once more. Their parents know better, though secretly wish the same.
