The Kingdom of Archaria

Overview

The Kingdom of Archaria is one of the principal nations to the West of the archipelago. (This may be confusing to many, due to the fact that the archipelago appears above the kingdom on almost all Archarian maps. This is because the conventional belief used to be that the top of the world was in fact the archipelago's center-in the East. This was soon disproved by the Gnomish scholar Roywyn Timbers . Despite this, it has remained customary in Archaria for maps to face East.). This Kingdom is home to many of history's greatest adventurers and heroes, it's cities are places of innovation and culture, and it's lands are wide and prosperous. However, of all it's vast lands, many of the ones further away from the cities are still untamed, and are riddled with mysteries and perils few can even dream of.

Legislative body

Archaria's legislation is mostly controlled by the crown, but it they seek to pass a law, or create new economic or foreign policies, the monarch must first consult their parliament, called a Court in Archaria. The Court can scrutinise the laws suggested by the Monarch and advise him/her based on their intuitions and/or research. Although the Court can advise the monarch, the monarch doesn't necessarily have to listen to their advice. However, to limit the monarch's power, if over five eighths of the Court votes against the monarch, the motion can be overturned. Courtiers are often careful to vote against the monarch unless they can be sure of a five eighths majority, as a more volatile monarch may accuse them of treason.
Courtiers come from all counties and provinces of Archaria, and come into the role differently based on whether they come from a county or a town. Courtiers who hail from countryside are most often hereditary nobles, and part of the old feudal system. On the other hand, towns and cities hold greater power over the court than counties, with cities having three representatives in the court: A burgher (or noble, in uncommon cases), a mage, and a priest. This concentrates the political power in the towns (much to the dismay of the counties), and moves the politics of Archaria away from the Feudal system.

History

Founding

The Kingdom was founded by refugees from the sunken state of Atlantiaj, who, having lost most of their possessions when their island was destroyed, had a difficult start to life on the mainland. They set up camp on a stretch of coast close to what is now Lenthall, and started to build a modest settlement. Now, before the arrival of the Atlantiajns (the 'j' is silent), What is now Archaria was divided between various nomadic tribes, and a few smaller city states, defended from the nomads and barbarians by strong walls. These barbarians would indeed be a huge challenge that would have to be overcome... TO BE CONTINUED

Major Imports
Archaria, though rich in most resources, is severely lacking in magical resources such as potion ingredients and certain material components for spells. Also on demand are exotic goods from the far south, such as perfumes and spices, as well as creatures such as Nalrigs. Furs and timber are imported from the north.
Judicial Body
ENFORCEMENT
Each city or province in Archaria has it's own force of guards, employed by the province's local government, who act as a police force. Although there may be many guards in large towns and cities, there are usually only 1 or 2 in most villages. In times to conflict, they make up garrisons and are in charge of recruitment and organizing local militia, as well as making up a portion of the armed forces.
JUSTICE
When it comes to courts, each town has a Bailiff, who is in charge of dealing with petty crimes, but for more serious crimes, there are judges for each province.
