The Old Church

Standing alone, a moat of empty streets surrounding it, a dilapidated building creaks out its existence. A damaged, skew sigil stands atop the mostly-tiled roof, once bearing the mark of whatever god looked over the inhabitants of the settlement. Echoes of its splendor still contained in the scattered shards of the stained-glass windows, marred by the dust of neglect. Entry to this once-holy structure is barred only by the skeleton of a door, hanging from a single, rusted hinge. Its partner nowhere to be found. A regular thoroughfare of rodents still graces the deadened halls of the old church, serving as both the visitors and the owners. A somber sight even for a forgotten settlement, the history of this building would make it unrecognizable to the hopeful historian. Barely a shadow of its former image.

Purpose / Function

It was once the shining center of a bustling town, representing both the light the dawn brings and the light inside each of its inhabitants. It served as a place of worship and as a refuge for the lost and desperate. Its original purpose soon forgotten as the region underwent a series of civil wars, genocides and violent transitions of power. The walls of the old building became the veil for the sins of the ashamed and insecure, their vile actions concealed by the guise of righteousness.

Alterations

Over time, indifference and neglect would warp the face of the structure, paint peeling off the walls and tiles slipping from the roof. No intentional alterations were made, but during the darker times of its history the place of worship became a place of torture. Pews were substituted for stocks, the pulpit a gallows and the basement a dungeon. No different in face, but with its still-beating heart wrenched out and wrung dry by the sins of the forsaken.
