Balmoran Steel Weapons and Armor
We have fine enough swords today but before the Queen's Rebuke... before all that ruin and war, we had real heroes, I mean the stuff of myth. And those heroes wielded steel befitting their legends.
The warriors of old Balmoral were men and women of a caliber that Tairos hasn't seen for many human generations. The weapons they took into battle were equally renown and effective. The method and ore used to construct both their weapons and armor were largely lost when their nation fell to The Autumn Queen and the apocalyptic assault of her Jaberwock. Many refugees would try to carry on the tradition of smithing made famous by Balmoral but without their finely tuned equipment, refineries and iron deposits the technique was eventually lost in favor of easier methods.
When Frial became home to the Grand Order of the Lion they brought with them many of the old relics, tomes and secrets they'd secured in their crusades to the Balmoran Plains prior. While much of the old ways of Balmoral still remained buried some knowledge was brought to light again. One such scrap of knowledge was the technique to make Balmoran Steel.
While the processes were recovered the means of processing raw ore and building the old foundries were still lost. The steel made in Frial today is similar to the old Balmoral steel but not identical. It lacks some of the characteristic sharpness and strength these items were known for.
Thanks to the Grand Order of the Lion many original pieces still exist today in Frial as well as in the hands of collectors across Tairos. They are especially prized in the city of Lockland as well. Frial, however, is the only place known to have enough of a surplus of the original items that that one or two pieces can often be found for sale in every smithery in the city.
Game Stats and Costs
Balmoral Steel Weapons- Weapons constructed using Frial's method allow the attacker to reroll any result of a 1 that comes up on their damage dice. Weapons made with the Frial Method cost 5X the cost of the generic version of the same weapon and can only be bought in Frial. Balmoran Steel Armor- Armor made using the Frial Method reduces all damage the wearer suffers from non-magical sources by 2 points. This is only available for Medium and Heavy Armors bought in Frial. The cost is 5X the cost of the same piece of generic armor. Old Balmoran Steel Weapons- Weapons constructed using Balmoral's original method allow the attacker to reroll any result of a 1 that comes up on their damage dice. They also ignore resistance to whatever type of damage they deal. Weapons made with the Old Balmoran Method cost 8X the cost of the generic version of the same weapon and can only be bought in Frial. Old Balmoran Steel Armor- Armor made using the original Balmoran Method reduces all damage the wearer suffers from all sources by 4 points. This is only available for Medium and Heavy Armors bought in Frial. The cost is 8X the cost of the same piece of generic armor.
