The Mad Moon

Known commonly as the Mad Moon, this lunar sister to Asunda travels in seemingly erratic patterns through the skies of Merthos, appearing to have a mind of her own. It is a small moon, less than a third of her sister in diameter. She reaches her full phase roughly three times a month.   The Mad Moon is considered to be the physical embodiment of the goddess Gerthi, and the names are sometimes used interchangeably.   Though she has no significant pull on the tides of Merthos, Gerthi is known to induce a special kind of creative madness called lunacy when she eclipses the sun. People who fall under Gerthi's gaze have a chance of becoming divinely inspired geniuses and master artists, but such boons have a price not all are willing to pay.   Gerthi's chosen are often eccentric, and many develop habits and neuroses that make them ill suited for urban life. Some people deliberately seek the moon's influence. As her movement is erratic and unpredictable, such aspirants spend much of their time outdoors in hopes of being noticed by her.   Lunacy, and by extension Gerthi are revered in certain cultures as a matron of creative arts. She is considered especially important in the western realm of Marsau, where her followers organize under the religious order of Children of the Inspiring Mother in the Sky. Colloquially they are known as the Lunatics.

Geography

Gerthi is a rather typical moon with a surface pock-marked by craters and other rock formations. She has a faint green hue and dust storms often blow over her surface, obscuring some of her features. The Mad Moon has two distinctly large craters on one side, of different sizes but sharing the same peculiar spiral pattern. These are commonly referred to as the Eyes of Gerthi.
