Catastrophist

During Calamity, there was a sudden need for a better understanding of the natural phenomena of Rhina. The best way to combat the violent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and storms was to understand what caused them in the first place. While a catastrophist is typically specialized into a specific phenomenon, the general term is used to describe anyone who studies the natural catastrophes of Rhina. While technically each type of natural phenomena has its own profession name, it would be extremely unlikely for someone to use a term other than catastrophist. Most people won't even recognize the term catastrophist, let alone something more specific and therefore obscure.
Catastophists are academics, and can be found wherever academic work is completed, most often near libraries. It is not uncommon for catastrophists to also know at least a little bit of earth-related magic. This can often aid them in field work, allowing for easier movement of rocks. Since the end of the catastrophy, there is no centralized organization of catastrophists. Instead, each individual scholar works independently or with their own small team.
Although catastophists made enormous breakthroughs that allowed the madness of the constant natural disasters to finally end, they have slipped into somewhat obscurity and few catastrophists are still studying. Part of this has to do with the far less frequent events they can study; it is hard to gain more information about volcanic eruptions, when the last one was over 50 years ago. Nonetheless, catastrophists are a vital profession. Most modern work is on predicting the next event since there is not typically enough power to prevent the events from happening outright. By having the catastrophists predict the event, peasants who may be harmed by the event can evacuate or appropriately prepare.
To become a catastrophist, it is customary to apprentice with a currently studying catastrophist. When the master finds their mastery on the subject sufficient, they will recognize them as a full academic. Typically, this requires the apprentice to contribute a noteworthy finding to the field.
