The Wyrmsguard

"Forever, we serve the crown. Forever, we revere the Skyhost. Forever, we honor the Kin. We shall never break these oaths, for as long as there is a Wyrm alive, we declare these pacts invincible."   --Motto

The Fallen Crown

The Wyrmsguard were an honor guard comprised of an elite group of dragonborn, that served Laest the Golden and his descendants during the golden age of Eitridea. They were a group utterly sworn to protecting the crown, and upholding its tenets.   In 308 ALF, Yaeza the Tyrant came to power, and replaced the Wyrmsguard with her own elites, the Black Nails. She exiled the guard, setting her own men to hunt them for sport. The Wyrmsguard have fled east, back to the Skymeet Isles. Rumor of them reforming, along with the other dragonborn clans, are as of yet unfounded.

Victims on Two Fronts

The fall of the Wyrmsguard was not entirely due to Yaeza - far from it. Almost in a microcosm of Eitridea itself, the Wyrmsguard's leadership had been decaying long before their governmental disbandment. While the rank and file of the guard remained much the same from its establishment, over the years, the leadership of the Wyrmsguard became far more founded in politics, less so in the ties to dragonborn culture that it had maintained in previous years. Whether the Wyrmsguard would have endured had it not been disbanded is left up to debate. Many believe it would have, though not in the same manner as it has been meant to function at its conception.

Invincible Honor Guard

For many years, nearly since their founding, the Wyrmsguard were said to be invulnerable. The noble dragonborn, able to face down the grimmest of foes without hesitation or flinch, and emerge victorious at that. Seven times since the Wyrmsguards' founding was the capital nearly taken during war or uprising, and every time, the Wyrmsguard turned the tide, reclaiming victory in the face of guaranteed defeat.   The legend of the Wyrmsguard being invincible may have been exaggerated. Certainly, they were powerless to prevent their own exile at the hands of Yaeza. Regardless, the level of mysticism surrounding the Wyrmsguard created a near mythic level of respect and fear for them, that still endures long after their dispersement.

Refounding in Blood

In larger dragonborn culture, the Wyrmsguard were and are viewed as a separate clan, despite their members having been drafted from multiple different clans. Among the ranks of the Wyrmsguard could have been found all manner of dragonborn, from cold and calculating chromatics to the more flamboyant metallics. As such, the loyalty and camaraderie within the clan transcends political, geographical, or any other barriers.   There are rumors that after decades of chaos, diaspora, and wandering, the dragonborn clans are reuniting, the Wyrmsguard among them. If these claims are true, the reverence surrounding the Wyrmsguard could easily turn a reunited race into a fighting force that could bend the wills of others without having to lift sword or spear.   But they are just rumors.
