The Diamond Guard

The Amber Guard started off as a small mercenary band, formed by an exiled noble many years ago seeking revenge of the family that cast him out. Those looking for glory, or just riches, joined the Amber Guard so they could be rewarded for helping the young noble retake their thrown. Unfortunately the war was lost, the noble died and his name was lost to history, but the Amber Guard remained and their prowess in battle earned them more employment.
As the Kingdom of Stonebia grew, more manpower was needed to conquer and hold nearby forts and territories; and so the king hired the well respected Amber Guard to fight for their course. It was not uncommon in these conquests for mercenary bands to defect to those they were fighting for the promise of better pay or rewards, but the Amber Guard outlasted them all and often took the initiative to hunt down these rebel bands. Eventually Stonebia conquered the target territories in these wars and the king awarded the Amber Guard for their loyalty with a castle for their headquarters, in return for their indefinite fealty, which they happily gave. 
In times of peace more so than war, the Amber Guard serve a number of purposes. The most elite among them form a small elite squad tasked with protecting the King of Stonebia. The Diamond Guard are trained or chosen to be the King's personal and family guard. The leader of this squad is known as the Master of the Guard and the position is currently held by Master Togo Harding. 
The king can change the manpower and structure of the guard as they please, but most kings have never bothered and left this to the Master of the Guard to take care of, therefore most of the time the standard tactic is used. The Master of the Guard has some extra roles than the standard Diamond Guard soldier. He is considered a part of the privy council and should attend meetings when he can to advise on issues of security. He also oversees some of the training and recruitment from the Amber Guard, should any of his brothers fall in combat or leave the squad.
While the Diamond Guard soldier use to be a lifelong post, in times of peace the guard were not needed as much and many soldiers wanted to leave to start a life and family while there was stability in the realm. Luckily they pitched their cause to a generous king. Initially even the Master of the Guard was changed to an elected position, with the ability for the king to veto, but after some infighting and sabotage from outgoing Masters, it was decided that this role should revert to a life service making sure that only the most dedicated soldiers would serve the realm for life. Two occasions are known where special permission was granted for a Master of the Guard to retire: the first due to old age and the second due to illness where the afflicted party wanted to live the rest of their life in peace and solitude.

The Standard Tactics
The standard number of soldiers in the Diamond Guard is 10 plus the Master of the Guard.
At all times there should be:
2 of the guard protecting the king at all times 2 soldiers should protect the queen 1 soldier for the heir and second in line 1 soldier to accompany any of the royal children deciding the leave the castle, should one be available. Otherwise 2 or 3 of the town guard must accompany them instead. Not all soldiers must be assigned to allow for downtime and proper rest periods.
The Master of the Guard can assume any of these positions assuming it does not conflict with his regular duties.
