The MegaSharpie

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The MegaSharpie was, essentially, what you get when you cross one of those multicoloured biros with a sharpie. It had several sharpie cartridges and tips of various colours in a funnel, each attached to a springloaded system like those of clicky-pens. Unlike the multicoloured biros from which it drew its inspiration, however, it still needed a lid to keep the ink inside from drying out.

Manufacturing process

The MegaSharpie was created from the broken remains of a bunch of normal sharpies, and various large springs and plastic bits that could be purchased at the creator’s local DIY shop. The case was custom-made by a friend of the creator who regularly worked with plastics, from the melted remains of the cases of the original sharpies.

The springs were then attached to the cartridges from the sharpies, and they were all crammed into the case in a way that was, according to the internet, aesthetically displeasing. From there, the pen was put together like a normal multicoloured biro, although in the video the creator accidentally put in one more colour than there were slots, which may have been the initial source for the internet’s hatred of the item.

Significance

When a video showcasing the MegaSharpie was released, it quickly became the fodder of the Internet, due to the primal rage it evoked from many of the internet users of that day. It went viral, surprisingly, because of this, meaning that more people were exposed to it and hated it.
