McClintok Middle School, Field 3
McClintok Middle School, being gifted with a very large green area, is where the Los Laterales Youth Soccer League tends to play their games. Every other weekend during soccer season, lines are spray painted into six youth-sized soccer fields, plus four very small fields for the under-six division.
Field 3, located near the school proper and somewhat shaded by an oak tree dying of armillaria root rot, is the least-welcomed field to see on your son's schedule. Exactly what about it is so irritating depends upon whom you are speaking to -- some speak of the dappled sunlight traveling through the oak's leaves throwing off players, others lament the tendency for the side away from the tree to become waterlogged. But if you ask the spectators, the parents, then the response becomes unanimous.
It is impossible to set up a fold-up chair on the sidelines of Field 3.
One might think that the problem is the roots of the tree, or perhaps pour drainage resulting in muddy conditions, and certainly there is some truth to that. But for unknown reasons, as soon as two legs are placed, the third will find no purchase in the ground, falling into a previously unseen hole.
Geography
The pitch itself is relatively typical; a drought-resistant strain of grass as is essentially a requirement in California. There have been talks of replacing the pitch with astroturf, but it was discovered that the push for this change was spearhead by an out-of-state artificial grass conglomerate.
Ecosystem
Some have hypothesized that the difficult sitting setup of this place are the result of gophers. However, nobody at Field 3 has ever been lucky enough to be blessed with the sight of a cute little gopher.
Ecosystem Cycles
During the springtime, pollen from trees across the road tends to accumulate over this field. It has been responsible for fifteen asthma diagnoses.
