Hero's Pass

Geography

Hero's Pass is located at the narrowest point of the Thundery Mountains . It is a narrow path that winds along the mountain slopes and connects the plains of Galandur with the Gowana desert. The desert side of the mountains is scorching hot, while the other side is bitterly cold.
At most places the path is about 10 ft wide, in between it narrows to about 5 ft. It is possible to cross the pass on horseback, but it is not passable with carriages or carts, as there are large steps cut into the stone at steep points.
On the plateau at the highest point of the pass, where cold and heat meet, there are the ruins of an old castle. The ruin has the remains of a keep and a tower. It is surrounded by half-ruined walls.

Fauna & Flora

Along the path, depending on the side, you will find either snow hares and eagles or reptiles and scorpions. Only very rarely do animals stray onto the plateau itself. Plants do not grow on the plateau either.

History

Hero's Pass was built centuries ago by the people of Galandur to create a faster and supposedly safer route to the other side of the Thundery Mountains. However, the extreme storms made the crossing almost impossible for ordinary travellers and traders.
In order to guard the pass and collect taxes, a castle was built on the plateau at the highest point of the pass. This also served as a place for travellers to rest and seek shelter. The castle served its purpose for many years until it was destroyed in a particularly violent storm.
The Galandur council sent several squads of workers and soldiers to repair the castle after the disaster, but they never returned. Since then, it has been said that something evil dwells in the ruins of the castle. The rumours range from an army of undead or ghosts to a mad mage who has taken up residence in the catacombs of the castle to plot the downfall of Levania.
Meanwhile, the Hero's Pass is only used by those who are either very desperate or very brave. Of those who dare to make the journey over Hero's Pass, only very few make it to the other side. Most people prefer to take a long journey and skirt the mountains in the north or circumnavigate them in the south.
