The Dathglar

Everything about the Dathglar is unnatural. Once a lush and fertile farming area, the desert area known as the Dathglar was created when the Krai-Jan desperately tried to save their Empire from falling to the Traazorite rebellion. In their arrogance they attempted to summon two Vazarjekai, dragons, from Karelon to defeat the upstart Sun worshipers. What happened instead was a magical cataclysm that destroyed two major Krai-Jan cities and brought into existence both the Dathglar and the swampy Jar Syt.   The Dathglar, or Blood Plain, is so named as its northern extremes are the contested boundary between Haradel and Falkaar. This border is the yearly site of border skirmishes and sometimes all-out war between the two kingdoms. Beyond these constant border wars very few venture into the Dathglar, usually only the bravest or most stupid seeking treasure in the inner deserts.   The once rolling fields and rivers were at once turned to shifting sands and haunted dunes by the magical cataclysm. The cities of the Dathglar were destroyed in the blink of an eye. The citizens of those cities were killed immediately, their spirits caught between life and death with no way to move on.   The blowing sands of the Dathglar are now haunted by these poor souls, some manifesting as angry spirits, while others are compelled to forever slave at the task they were last doing when the end came. Magical creatures roam the sands as well, beasts transformed by the magic or caught in the same place humanoid residents were.   If those weren't enough dangers to contend with, the boundary between Karelon and Faelon is very thin in the Dathglar. Demons regularly pour through feygates in the open desert, warring with the undead inhabitants of the sands and trying desperately to gain a foothold in Faelon. Indeed, the most common living beings that enter the Dathglar are those that belong to one of the many demon hunting organizations of the world. Unwilling to leave the otherworldly creatures to their own in the sands of the Dathglar, they are constantly crusading in the Dathglar to cleanse it of any demonic taint before it strengthens to the point that it can invade the civilized kingdoms of the world.   Any adventurer that braves the Dathglar will find daily peril there from both the environment and the denizens of the magical sands. Going unprepared is sure death, and even prepared an adventurer would be wise to make peace with their chosen deity before traipsing through the unnatural sands of the Blood Plain. Only those with the stoutest hearts, the best provisions, and a lot of luck will make it in and back out.   What treasures await in the Dathglar none can tell. The magical cataclysm that created the arid plain could very well have created powerful artifacts beyond the reaches of even the most powerful of mages. Many of the destroyed towns and villages of the Dathglar remain to be explored, the dangers from creatures and ferocious environment keeping most treasure hunters out of its borders. Yes, there are riches to be found in the Dathglar. There is also a price to be paid for wandering into this magical wasteland. Whether the price is worth the riches is yet to be seen...
