Enshrouder Profession in Faelon | World Anvil

Enshrouder

The Enshrouder is Ankala, a rare sight in Faelon these days. The Ankala people are the survivors of a genocidal war waged by the Traazorites against the Krai Jan Empire to overthrow them.   What was left of the Krai Jan escaped in various ways and found their way back to a way of life that they had lived before they became a domineering Empire on both the Southern and Northern Continentint. They became Ankala - People of the Valley - once again.   Most Ankala tend to be peaceful. They do not have armies, nor do they engage in open warfare unless provoked. As a people, they are pacifists if allowed. Many have taken their peaceful ways to mean they are weak, a mistake they don’t make twice.   Ankala live in large groups known as Saya - Bodies. They are mostly nomadic, though there are a fair few Saya that settle down in cities across Faelon, at least for a while.   Some Ankala will leave their Saya and explore the world on their own. These are called Ankala Yafa - Orphans. Ankala Yafa will sometimes find their ways into freebands, putting their skills to use fighting and searching for treasure, glory, or both.   Many Ankala have magical abilities, and they are well known crafters of magical items. Enshrouders are mastering the art of Void Magic, and are highly sought by freebands. Void is the energy magic associated with the Chaler Alcha Garak named Safa - their god of the dead and the endless night. It is this endless night - the void - that Enshrouders use to confound their enemies, banish them beyond this reality, and cloak themselves in to hide from their foes.   Enshrouders are coveted for their ability to mask friendly troops from line of sight. A freeband employing an Enshrouder can advance through any terrain without fear of arrows cutting into their warriors.   Their Void Magic can also be offensive, leaching energy from a target or sucking hapless victims into the everdark of the Void. They can also fortify weapons with the power of the void, making them a far more dangerous instrument that virtually ignores armor.   Though they are not often seen apart from their Saya, when an Enshrouder is encountered in battle, they are rightly feared by their enemies. And if they are being honest, their command of the Void makes their friends nervous as well.
