The Ranger of Elysium

If you look to the southern night skies of the Realm of Ereglast, you will find outlined in the cosmos in a series of distant burning suns, the figure of The Ranger of Elysium. The constellation is a series of closely entwined stars creating the image of a ranger in fur armor, long flowing hair, an ax raised to the north. To his side is the constellation Polg, a wolf.   If you talk to historians, bards, and astronomers of the realm, eventually you will hear the tales of Yold and Polg, the protectors of the southern forests and plains of Ereglast. Yold was a ranger, raised by his father Greyold to respect, protect, and cherish the woods and plains and the flora and fauna within. Greyold had befriended the local druids and the dryads and when Yold came of age, the druids taught Yold how to speak and live in harmony with the animals. Conversing with his animal companions, the deer taught Yold how to stay alert and how to quickly run from danger. The foxes taught the ranger how to become one with the shadows of the trees. The hawks taught Yold how to strike quickly and dispatch prey with dignity.   For his entire life, which was extended from a deep knowledge of herbalism, a diet of natural food, and forest magic, Yold and his wolf companion Polg protected the southern forest from poachers, over zealous wood cutters, evil mages, and warring orcs and bugbears. On his 801st birthday, Yold became ill. There was a gathering in the southern forest, and every animal within walking distance made the journey to Yold's death bed.   The forest creatures begged and pleaded to the gods to save Yold's life. Who would protect them in the future? Who would watch over them? The gods answered their call, and though not quite in the way they had intended. As Yold's essence left his body, it raised up into the sky above, finding an empty spot in that great blackness overhead, he became a constellation, ever watchful over the southern forests. Polg died of a broken heart only a few days later, and he joined his friend in the night sky. Today you can still look up and see Yold and Polg. Sailors often use the constellation as a way to navigate the seas of Ereglast at night.
