Pezrin

Pezrin is a gnomish mining settlement west of the Wood of Glass in the foothills of the Andular Mountains.

Pezrin is a bit more unusual than other gnomish mining towns, as it has burgeoned well beyond the need given by the veins of silver in the surrounding hills. Most of the town of Pezrin, more properly a small city, lies deep within one of the larger hills in the shadow of Mt. Aerie, and the large hill has appropriately been given the name "Little Nest" as a result. The name "Pezrin" doesn't fit as neatly, as it's a gnomish word that roughly translates to "Mossy Lunch" and fits a somewhat inscrutable gnomish naming convention.

Pezrin begin as a silver boomtown, but as it grew, so, too, did the dwarven kingdom in the southern Andular mountains, and likewise the realms of the dark elves in the northern part of the chain were growing. The three met up at Pezrin rather by chance. One day, dwarven excavators were seeking a path to dark elf tunnels (the two species are part of an alliance that includes the gnomes) and quite literally broke through into a gnomish miner's bedroom while she was staring at the wall, trying to discern the source of the noise she was hearing. A dwarf named Turlok Hammersong appeared in denim overalls held at the shoulders with yellow suspension straps, wearing a magically glowing headlamp. He found his lamp's glow falling squarely on one Miss Glowybean Surlypop, a sturdy gnomish woman only half a head shorter than the miner...she was tall for her kind, and he was short for his, but we digress. That was about it for the real story beyond some confusion followed by mirth and great laughter.

The story was told and retold many times, and it's now become a meme of sorts, and the story is intentionally altered to be more and more ridiculous, sometimes involving bears, magical gateways, giant centipedes, a barrel of paint, nudity, or whatever else the bards and storytellers want to add. It's a local custom and it's considered best to have one or both of the original people, Turlok and Glowybean, are present. They're both good sports and they both love a pint, so once in a while the town is treated to a telling of tales, all of which are wild and different, and all of which are purportedly what happened that day in Miss Glowybean's bedroom.

Pezrin itself, then, grew in-between the kingdoms of the dwarves and dark elves. The gnomes don't really have anything more than scattered dots of enclaves, villages, and mining towns too disparate to be called a kingdom, so they were happy enough to find themselves with a booming gnomish town, as it were. The town is a series of caves and rooms built into or against Little Nest and has grown to also include what looks a like a small town in its own right beyond the cave system. It is accessible via a dead-end surface street, but also through the primary thoroughfare Turok Hammersong, along with his crew, was excavating. Difficult and remote surface access and easy inner-mountain access translates to a city that is almost entirely comprised of dwarves, dark elves, and gnomes.

Pezrin still has an active mining community and has turned up several other veins in nearby hills, but it's a sort of rest stop for both dwarves and dark elves en route to each other's territories. As a result, it's become something of an entertainment town. Gambling, prostitution, house camping (it's a thing if you live in caves), gladiatorial contests, and more keep the many passers-by amused, not to mention endless bars and endless bards telling the aformentioned tall tales in them.

The weather's usually of the mild, temperate variety, the location has been a fairly safe one, and the continuing silver boom has made many gnomes in the region rich. The atmosphere is convivial, and the handful of outsiders who find their way here tend to be greeted with less suspicion than they might find elsewhere.
