Pact Mage (Warlock)

"We had been chasing her for hours, and we knew Vioven Sanguine was still in the small cabin and taken the family hostage. We knew time was short and that even with only three of us left, we had to act fast. The horrors that woman was likely inflicting on those poor souls..."

"I gave the order and Brulk crashed through the front door, charging in and drew Vioven's wrath. I lost count on how many Eldritch blasts he took before he fell. During the fight Kerym snuck into the cabin from a side window. I heard the commotion from the outside and that's when I went in. I saw three bodies on the floor, each blackened and decayed, I assumed these were the hostages. On the far side of the room Kerym grabbed Vioven, slamed her into the opposite wall and drove her deep blade into Vioven chest. I thought that had finished her, but, by the Tome of the Cosmos, that was when I saw Vioven reach up and grab Kerym by the throat and mutter an incantation. I saw Kerym's eyes go wide as across her skin necrotic energy ravaged her. Vioven, Gods...she just turned her head towards me and smiled."

"Well I did the most prudent thing I could think of. I quickly reached into my bag and put bat guano on my finger, pointed it at Vioven and Kerym and unleashed the most powerful fireball I could summon. The room exploded and I was blown back. In moments the entire cabin was ablaze. I let the cabin burn and after all that was left was embers, I searched and found all their bodies, Brulk's, Kerym's and Vioven's. The cost was high, but ending that Warlock was worth the price in blood."

Warlocks, obtain their magical abilities through pacts made with beings of supernatural power. Although, in theory, the Gods of Eirath "could" make such a pact their assistance is associated with prayer and divine influence. After the events of the Divine Struggle the practice of magics not associated with Divinity or Wizardry fell out of favor.   In 17 P.C. the Wizard's Compact in conjunction with the Divine Temples recommended the outlawing of Pact Magic (Warlocks) and Sorcery.  By 42 P.C. the practice of licensed Sorcery was restored. As a result of this, all members of the Bureau of Magical Investigation and Compliance are allowed to hunt down and arrest or terminate any Warlock they find.
