Lake of the Weeping Warrior

The Myth

Centuries and centuries ago, there was a lone warrior. On what would eventually be called the continent of Medoria, this warrior wandered aimlessly. The Great War was over, peace was throughout the land, but it did not matter to the warrior. After losing their home, their family, and everything else they held dear, what good was this “peace” for them?   Each step they took was more burdened than the next. Though their armored boots grew lighter as the ever-changing landscape wore at their soles, their own soul grew heavier and heavier as the weight of their loss slowly became more real. With no final destination to be had, this burden would inevitable become too much to bear.    In the end — they wept. All they could do was weep, as soon a forgotten valley became their unknown destination.   Seasons came and went just as quickly as they had before. Countless beasts discovered the weeping warrior and watched as their tears continued to flow year after year after year. Even when their body eventually began to fade, the tears persisted as strong as the day they began.   “I cannot bring that which you held most dear back to you” finally came a gently voice on the wind, “but I hope you may find comfort in the love of your tears outshining the sorrow.”   And it was then, as soon as the breeze faded, the tears that had long been soaking into the basin instead began to fill the space. In what seemed like an instant, a lake appeared with a singular island in the center.   Under this island, the warrior remained. Their tears now flowing with purpose. Proof that their love will forever endure even after they fade.   This is why the lake remains. Not quite seawater, not quite fresh. No heat hot enough, not storm strong enough, no creature powerful enough to disturb this hallowed place.

Interpretations

All who grew up on Medoria have heard of some variation of this myth and would know the general location of the lake of which it speaks about. Various different peoples and religious groups claim to know more details of the myth, like the name of the warrior or the being that spoke to them and created the lake. The version of the myth presented above omits references to specific entities. A bard, for example, may tell this version of the tale so as to not potentially offend any who are listening.
