Space Traffic Controllers

STCs, the folks who get the trade ships in the airlocks. The people who manage the locations of parking. Who ensure that the station doesn't get struck by a ship out of the blue, killing the whole crew. Pay grade? Lower than your average Gunman aboard a pretty average ship.
The lives of the entire crew are worth less than operating a single ship-borne weapon, so it would seem.
The role requires a very varied understanding of many topics and several life skills. 3 dimentional thinking skills, management ability, organization, pre-planning and flexibility in those plans, et cetera.

Purpose

The role of an STC is to ensure that the starships that arrive on a location (e.g. Planet, Station, or in some cases another ship) are given proper pathing to their parking location. They are also responsible for takeoff, as well as any interior taxi rotues required for interior station flight - though this one is rather more rare, only typically found on Codai Majorus.

STCs aboard stations operate using a 3-dimentional console, capible of displaying a map of the exterior as well as the signiatures of the ships that are being detected around the station. This allows them a full visual on all ships. Routing is provided via these consoles by the use of Flight Nodes (Points in space that only exist relative to the station). While some ground sites have similar versions for showing entire planets, these are typically more difficult to operate, maintain, and suffer in the field of accuracy.
More conventional STCs operating via radar and sight run a slightly simpler job, typically distributing landing bays. However, this still requires a vast array of cameras, computers, and most importantly - active planning, lest a space port become backed up; Folks don't like it when their limited oxygen supply is wasted talking to ground crew.
