Soul Essence

Every living creature has essence within them. They live through, or perhaps, because of this essence. The power held up in soul essence is the reason it is such an easy and readily available fuel source for those that are evil and depraved enough to utilize sacrifice for their own power. This essence, once consumed, prevents that life from returning again. A cleric or other being capable of resurrection need the presence of the person's soul essence in the world for them to return that person to life. This, alone, is enough to make the practice of soul magic illegal in most places. The technology does not quite exist to allow the access to soul essence without destroying the creature being siphoned from.

"I heard that Alphari was working to try to use soul essence from a living host." There was curiosity in the apprentices voice as he turned his attention towards the person working beside him. It was going to take them all night to translate the texts. They might as well have conversation while doing it. She wrinkled her nose, though, with his words. "What? It would be amazing if we could do that, you know? That would be.. limitless possibility..." He trailed off; cut off by Amellia's little scoff.

"Who would want to live like that? That would be like.. giving up yourself.. or.. or forcing someone else to. I do not think that is good magic, El. I think that Alphari knows that too." There was a disgust and genuine sadness to her voice. It wasn't like she could stop a wizard like Alphari. Not alone.

Material Characteristics

Once extracted through magical means from the body, Soul Essence has two different physical forms. One is a mundane liquid appearance and a muted, lifeless, red color. Similar to blood, it is viscus in nature and has a similarly tacky quality when it is exposed to air for too long. Soul Essence will never completely dry, as blood is capable of doing, but will instead start to rapidly decay and flake away until it eventually dissipates into the air, the extracted soul destroyed but never utilized for its power.

If extracted carefully and at the moment of death, Soul Essence is completely invisible to the naked eye. It can be channeled and transmitted over great distances with the use of magic.

Life & Expiration

It takes approximately an hour before soul essence loses its viability. Beings that utilize soul essence in their spells must work quick to utilize the fuel.
