Obelisk of Alwealdas

Deep in the heart of the Alwealdasmerc Swamplands, piercing the heavens from atop its hill and breaking the surrounding mangrove forest, stands the Obelisk of Alwealdas. It's base is covered in creeping mangrove vines, thirstily drinking from the endless streams of water seeping from the obelisk's rune-covered onyx surface. No one has yet managed to translate what the runes covering the obelisk say, for they are written in a long lost tongue of a civilisation which seems to not have left behind many other artefacts.

Purpose / Function

While the obelisk's true purpose remains a mystery the natural philosopher's from Madamsrest‎ have put forward a couple of theories. Some believe the obelisk was placed here by an ancient civilisation to preserve the ecosystem they lived in, who's original source of nutrition was somehow lost. They further propose that the obelisk was originally placed at a mountaintop, but that the constant stream of water degraded it into the small hill it is today. Others believe a more fringe theory that the obelisk was placed here to flood the world in an endless diluvian torrent of water. But a combination of faulty magics and a species of plant living nearby that was able to absorb most of the water put a stop to this.

Architecture

The Obelisk of Alwealdas is 21 metre tall, four-sided narrow spear-like monument. It's surface is made from a glossy black material and each side is covered in carved runes filled up with white stone.

History

The Obelisk of Alwealdas was discovered in the year 1578 by a team of explorers and adventurers from Madamsrest‎, searching for the source of the Madame rive During their parlous journey they lost four fifth of their original party, but in the end the explorers, under guidance of Doctor Jonaszoon, rediscovered the obelisk and found it as the river's source.
