Cleric of Lathair

"Well, since you seem to be a little low on coinage, and are so certain that you have a winning hand, why don't you add your pretty little slave there to the pot? I'm sure we can all agree that she's worth at least what you need to keep playing. Unless, of course, you're not as sure of your hand as you appear."   -Talgrim Hollowwise, professional gambler and cleric of Lathair

Career

Qualifications

A desire to serve the god, a talent for lying and trickery, with a little bit (or more) recklessness thrown in.

Perception

Purpose

The purposes of serving Lathair are manyfold, although since the devils flooded the world, the main focus is on helping those who are forced into slavery. The ultimate goal is to free all of the slaves they can, a lofty goal indeed. There are many lengths to which a cleric will go to help the enslaved, or even the imprisoned, and many have found themselves in dire straits from going against the odds.

Social Status

Any status gained by those who serve Lathair is not because of this service, but in spite of it. Clerics of Lathair can be found among most of the socio-economic classes, although it is quite rare for those of high status to hold the title. Most clerics claim other professions publicly, some like bard and gambler being the most common.

Operations

Tools

All clerics of Lathair carry at least something that is used in a game of chance, and they inevitably have a favourite coin to flip in the case of difficult decisions. Many carry instruments, parchment, and quills with ink, as masquerading as a bard is one of the most common disguises for a cleric of Lathair due to the proliferation of outgoing and friendly clerics as well as the bardic ability to use healing spells. The more athletically inclined clerics usually carry things used in the pursuit of their athletic abilities.

Workplace

There are few true temples to Lathair on Bastarre anymore, but those that exist are either well hidden or hiding in plain sight in the form of casinos and other places that allow games of chance or focus on competitions of various sorts. Inevitably found in all temples and other places of worship are dice, cards, or other implements of gambling.

Provided Services

Clerics of Lathair are frequently called upon to heal the sick and injured. The most common service they provide (outside of gambling, of course), is to free those who are fettered and enslaved. If a way can be found to free a slave, it is certain that one of these clerics will make the attempt.

Dangers & Hazards

The hazards of being a cleric of Lathair are many, and all quite dangerous. Even the mere suspicion of being a cleric is met with arrest and torture, and it is very difficult to prove innocence once suspected. There is also some danger from the citizenry, as many are quite leery of being anywhere near a cleric of Lathair, as they worry that suspicion and punishment will be their fate. Because of this, clerics (or those suspected of being clerics) are sometimes turned in to the law by citizens attempting to avoid being implicated.
Type
Religious
Legality
After the opening of the Hellgate, the worship of both Lathair and Megiana was forbidden, all known clerics rounded up and tortured to death, although a number of clerics of the god Lathair, who is a god of freedom and liberation, were also forced into slavery to be made an example of. It remains one of the greatest crimes to worship these gods, and those who are found to be clerics in their service undergo terrible torture, with some being forced into imprisonment in the Prison of Tortured Souls.
