Fire Magic

Schools of Elemental Magic
Generic article | Sep 26, 2020

Of the various types of magic on Aqualon, elemental magic is the easiest to attain and the most prolific kind across the globe. There are five sub-types of elemental magic: Water, Fire, Lightning, Earth, and Wind, each with its own schools. (721 Words)

Like all kinds of elemental magic, fire magic taps into Keeper Magic by way of an ur-soul: The ur-soul of fire.   The art of fire magic survived the Reshaping of the World among the The Angel Saxons of High Saxia, children of the Albenmannen. It was given to the Tarkaal Men of the Middle Lands in the 4th century AID by the Angel Saxons as an olive branch in exchange for them helping in erecting new angel stones in the Middle Lands and maintaining them.

School Aspects

Attunement defines how strong the connection between the magus and the corresponding ur-soul is. The more refined a magus's attunement, the more efficiently will their soul conduct magic for manipulating that element. Efficiency is useful because too powerful a flow will result in spellblight.   Versatility defines how varied and complex the applications of the elemental magic are. Conjuring a flame with fire magic is a very basic application of that magic while making a source of light with it is a versatile application.   Flexibility defines how creatively a magus can use her elemental magic. Rigid magic traditions and methodical schools can produce incredible power and versatility but often restrict how freely a person can manipulate an element. More complex rules can produce more powerful results that may in turn be less useful in some situations.

Middlish fire magic became more and more powerful over the centuries, centered around the The Bonfire Shrine, until the mad magus Hestia Bygate, a member of the shrine and its special order, the Fire Watch, defected to the Yamato Kingdom, taking the secrets of fire magic with her.   Though the fire magic of Yamato is far more sophisticated than their other elemental magic thanks to this, the magic of Hestia's clan, the Jô'oo Clan and the affiliated Ryûga Order of fire mages, has been in decline since her death and never quite caught up to that of the Bonfire Shrine and the mages of Lumina Aka.

A shrine dedicated to the Eternal Flame of Lumina Aka, and also a recognized magus academy of the Middle Lands. ~ 405 Words

The priests and shrine maidens of the Bonfire Shrine have maintained the Eternal Flame of Lumina Aka since it was given to them by the Angel Saxons in 320 AID. Since then, a number of small shrine villages have grown around the colossal flask that contains it. There, priests and priestesses are taught the art of fire magic, both to maintain the Eternal Flame and, if they have the aptitude, to join the Fire Watch, an organization of fire mages who travel the Middle Lands and protect communities from fires.

The attunement of Bonfire Shrine mages is one of the most incredible on Aqualon. They tap into the Great Clockwork via their inner Gates of Enlightenment and have built up a powerful resilience to spellblight, because their school of magic focuses on suppressing and maintaining fires. Suppressing a fire reverses the flow of magic, and can overwhelm the magus, leading to spontaneous combustion.   This school of fire magic uses chants to open their gates and get the magic flowing.

The Monastery of Five Paths is not only renowned as a spiritual mecca for those who seek enlightenment in the elements such as ur-soulists, but also a well-respected magus academy even in the eyes of the elitist Middlish mages. This is due to the incredible ability of trained Monastery of Five Paths monks to change their elemental attunement within the span of one day, enabling them to manipulate any element of their choice given a 24 hour preparation period.   The downside to this unique feat is that the attunement itself does not reach as deep as it does in other schools, and while a large portion of their magic is sealed away with the other four elements at any given time, they have a versatile repertoire of spells for each element as well as a commendable modicum of flexibility in their application. Those monks who leave the monastery are highly valued as teachers in other academies and can easily find work wherever magic is in demand.

Using a combination of Bonfire Shrine chants and martial arts movements to channel their magic, the Ryûga Order boasts a versatile array of fire spells and a good level of attunement. They were founded by Hestia Bygate, the ancestor of the Jô'oo Clan using stolen fire magic.   This special order serves the imperial court directly and is one of the fiercest and most feared military assets of the Yamato Kingdom.

The descendants of the Albenmannen. Weavers of magic, blacksmiths of mighty artifacts, builders of tall stony halls, children of the Old Gods. (3116 Words)

High up in the stony halls of High Saxia, great warriors garner the esteem of their peers and lofty nobles of the Three Kingdoms. But few attain the status of celebrity that master smiths of High Saxia attain.   An angel smith attains his mastership when their hair has turned fully white. While spellblight is a feared affliction in most places around the world, among the Nordmen and especially the Angel Saxons it is seen as a mark of honor and power. This is because ever piece of magic arms and armor forged by an angel smith requires ripping a piece of their soul free and working it into the metal. This causes accumulative damage to their gates and leads to blight.   Before the smiths learn to distill their souls, they first learn the simpler elemental magic of either fire or wind. Only when they can use magic to control the heat of the forge fire, are they ready to learn the true craft of High Saxia.

The Jô'oo Clan
Organization | Feb 10, 2019

The Jô'oo Clan is one of the Clans of Yamato. It exists since its founding in the Age of Awakening by the notorious Hestia Bygate, destroyer of Estverde. And both feared and respected, the clan has carved out an impresive name all of its own. ~ 3018 Word

The Jô'oo Clan are the descendants of Hestia Bygate, who founded the clan after gaining great renown, responsibility, and special dispensation from the Yamato Imperial Court. With one of the greatest fire mages of history as a founding mother, the clan has always produced fire mages of incredible talent, and most of these join the Ryûga Order when they come of age.   However, those of the Jô'oo line have their own family secrets, their iemoto, which are passed down along the main line. This has always ensured members of the Jô'oo main family to take up leadership positions within the Ryûga Order and form the backbone of the Yamato magical military.

Founded during the beginning of the magical industrial revolution in the Middle Lands after the invention of spell ink in 820 GE, the Seers of Tarkaal became a secret refuge for victims of spellblight. Those who suffered from the affliction of white hair and cobalt-blue eyes after overusing magic became more and more common with the introduction of magic engines, and blighters remained heavily stigmatized in Middlish Society.   The Seers of Tarkaal were exiled members of the Fire Watch in the beginning, those who had given their health to fight fires across the Middle Lands. They settled in a small cove near the pools at the foot of Mt. Tarkaal, the Seer Pools, and throughout the centuries that cove gave way to a popular temple.   Expanding on the esoteric teachings of the Bonfire Shrine, the seers developed a special type of clockwork magic that allowed them to see into the past, into distant lands, and sometimes into possible futures. This clockwork magic is based on fire magic and requires mastery of its basic principles, as the seers see their visions in the flames.   When doing this, they will always turn their backs on those who have sought them out, for their cobalt-blue eyes would give away their blight. To avoid detection, they dye their hair and wear blindfolds whenever they are not sure of their absolute privacy.
