Mome Gwythlyn Cloyd (a.k.a. The Impotent)

In theory, few can dispute the power of Mome Gwythlyn II in the Iron Ecclesiarchy. She is the leader of the church itself and as such holds an immense amount of power over the people and the interpretation of the will of the Goddess. Practically; however, the office of the Mome has seen a decrease in its power in recent years. Mome Gwythlyn's general reputation of a recluse and non-interventionist has only added to the offices image of impotency and there are some who claim that it is the Empress who rules the church now.
Those closest to the Mome report that she is seemingly unconcerned about the Empress' encroachment on her traditional authority. Reportedly her concerns are mostly on small sets of ruins in the far north with her having recently sent small contingents of Seekers over the border to investigate them. Every day more and more artifacts from these sites are brought to the Cil-Sylagh Cathedral for her inspection before being taken below and stored in well guarded vaults.
Truthfully many consider it unusual that the studious Gwythlyn was chosen to succeed the office of Mome in the first place. While considered a popular and well renowned scholar during her time as a nun many were surprised when the previous Mome selected her as her replacement, as traditionally Momes were selected from the ranks of the churches greatest warriors. While her selection did prove unpopular her predecessor Mome Sophya III was quick to crush any opposition to her taking the position and she was allowed to assume the role of Mome immediately upon Sophya's death.
Since her ascension, she has proven to be a deeply divisive leader within the church. While most of her recent predecessors favored an aggressive policy towards the northern tribes Gwythlyn was known for taking a more moderate view of the role of the church in these conflicts; often journeying to the border to mediate conflicts and arrange treaties. While this made her popular in more moderate circles and with then Empress Klaras; it made her widely unpopular amongst the people and the more traditionalist factions of the church. This discontent came to a head during the Daringeal Rebellion which saw Empress Klaras deposed in favor her cousin Empress Andora, a conflict that her own inquisitors and nuns were noted to have taken no part in.
With the ascension of the new Empress and the increase in war fervor in the general public as a result of rumors of the northern tribes building their forces her power over the church has dwindled; she now only has control of a small group of priests and inquisitors still fully loyal to her. With war with the northern tribes fast approaching many have begun to wonder how long it will take for the unpopular Mome to be ousted for one who is seen as more favorable to the war; while others wonder what exactly her agenda is if any.

A moderate Mome is extremely unusual, but Gwythlyn has never been one to stand on tradition. While she claims to believe that standing against the Spirits is important she has thus far favored taking a wait and see approach in most conflicts and has shied away from aggressive inquisitions into Spirit worshiping territories. She is was a high ranking member of the Seekers before she ascended to her current office and shares that orders belief that knowledge is key to the people of the world defending themselves from their enemies.

She is a convincing speaker in academic matters but often fails to inspire people or succeed in changing their mind in emotional ones. While she is clearly quite confident in her interactions with people she often clearly tries to hurry through conversations and dismisses people she considers of lesser intelligence. Often distracted and introverted she rarely makes appearances at social occasions if she can avoid it.

Often airy and distracted. Speaks slowly and carefully and often has a habit of staring off into space. Wraps her hair around her finger when she is lost in thought. Tends to go on long lectures if she likes a person and thinks they are compotent.
