The Vanaran, the Shades of the Sands (Vuh-nah-rin)

It was once called Nethilorn, but then it grew, built on on some sort of platform that kept growing and expanding until it simply stopped as if satisfied with the city's size. The name of Nethilorn was shed as those that ran the city believed they had built something far better, the City of Vanar, the City of Shade and Sand.

The Vanaran

The denizens of the city have gotten used to and rather enjoy the shifting ability of the city as it is able to travel through the sands to avoid both invasions and the dangers of the Southern Sands.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

While Common is spoken here, there is a refined version of Thieves Cant that is woven into a lot of phrases, so much so that certain phrases have double meanings if said in a particular manner. While it best works in Common, Elvish, and Draconic, the phrasings can be be spotted as something off in someone's speech in other languages and can tip off a perceptive person to the truth that another conversation is happening.

Shared customary codes and values

Any and all residents of the city share the same code: "Honor the trade. The city trusts you, so trust the city."

Common Etiquette rules

Many people of the city keep to themselves and are more focused on the business of trade and honorable dealings. To be called untrustworthy in a city that is untrustworthy to any that know of its history is to be "blacknamed" which can affect the family's trade overall.   Any disputes that are had between people are settled in private as to settle disputes publicly (through violence or for "safety precautions") is seen as a very basic form of distrust and disrespect. While they understand that outsiders prefer to do business that way, they are the only exceptions to the rule and they will make deals with the people that do trust them over the ones that wish to deal in public areas.   If anything violent were to happen to either party within the private meeting, it will blackname the host or both families (if both were citizens of the city) and an investigation by the city's guard will be started.
