Tukea, the Northeast Star

As the night-blanket crosses the sky and shrouds the land in darkness, only faint glimmers of normal daylight emerge from the holes poked within it. These stars are permanent scars in the night-blanket after ferocious battles between the people of the ground and those of the sky in forgotten ages. However, one star called Tukea does not seem to be a fixture of the night-blanket. It instead resides over the islet of Ankkuri, fixed in place before vanishing with the dawn.

History

Tukea is thought to have made Ankkuri its ward many ages ago, long before man had walked across its ground or gazed down on it from their cloud balconies. Its first settler, Keegan, had pushed east from his home in search of a powerful rune to sell to the highest bidder. He supposed that Tukea might have been the creation of an age-old runesmith who had mastery over countless other powers.   Keegan had hired a ship of highly-experienced sailors, but even they struggled against the swells that engulfed them. As Keegan saw the blue light of Tukea shining over the horizon, an enormous wave capsized the vessel. He was thrown from the deck and into the cold, murky darkness of the waves. The roar of the moving water gradually gave way to a calm, gentle flow past his ears as his body went numb.   He then heard something akin to singing, though he struggled to make sense of the notes. He soon realized this was because they were not solely audible. Each shift in pitch or pause in time caused him to see various fragments in his mind. Once the sonata was complete, a glyph had flashed before his eyes.   Keegan awoke with a start, splashing and floundering at the surface of the sea. In the scant moments before dawn, he could make out the soft blue of Tukea against the orange hues of sunrise. Under it, mere strokes away, sat a grassy islet covered in lumber and livestock the likes of which he had never seen. On its coast sat the waterlogged ship he had initially ventured out upon, damaged but operational.   He spent the morning feasting on the island's plentiful fruit and animals, gorging himself on the ambrosia. He then took a peaceful rest under the shade of a large tree whose roots felt like pillows under his head and back. Keegan later awoke in the late evening, though the night-blanket had not covered him in darkness. Instead, Tukea sat just above him and the rest of the island. They were covered in its signature pale blue light, as if warded against creatures of the night or seas. As he gazed about, he heard the crash of a large wave and looked to the damaged ship he had arrived upon. The shadow of a carving upon its hull revealed the rune he had seen while underwater.   Keegan knew what message Tukea had sent him. Either take the rune and go home to never return, or stay and keep the rune a secret. Become rich beyond his wildest dreams, or reside forever in Tukea's paradise.   Keegan ran to the shoreline and shoved the ship into the water before he could change his mind. He could have sworn the pale blue reflecting in the jet black water had burned a bright red before vanishing entirely.   He returned safely home, quickly selling off the sketch of the rune to an unknown individual. Some speculate that it may have been Ig Rot, commonly used in agriculture to burn out the roots of old crops and weeds. Other believe the rune had been the fabled Ryck Alto, able to manipulate the waves and possibly even skies if the base material was rare enough.   However, the main focus turned to Tukea as countless other would-be entrepreneurs set about to find their own special runes there. They all met their ends as their guiding light grew scornful of man, crashing and capsizing any ships that dared to venture near its glow. From then on, common warnings in most seaside pubs became a set of three:
1: Handle your grog properly.
2: Never follow the singing.
3: Beware the pale blue light.
